The Cardioid Principle

To increase bass sound pressure, a second SONAR 115 Sub D can be used. In the classic full-stack setup with two subs radiating forward, a "all-around" sound pressure increase of 3 dB is achieved. What makes the SONAR 115 Sub D special are its cardioid capabilities. Two special presets enable a cardioid setup, where the lower bass radiates backward, without complex calculations or delay correction.

For this, the lower SONAR bass is directed backward with the "Cardioid Rear" preset selected, and the upper bass radiates forward with the "Cardioid Front" preset. Both basses now play perfectly together without further adjustments.

When and Why Does a Cardioid Setup Make Sense?

The cardioid principle is based on canceling frequencies radiated backward. While mid and high frequencies can be directed, low frequencies spread spherically. This often leads to an unpleasant excess of bass on and behind the stage. It is also increasingly common for event organizers to specify exact sound distribution, e.g., for festival tents and city center stages.

The SONAR 115 SUB D meets all mechanical and acoustic requirements to quickly and easily realize effective cardioid setups, with up to 34 dB reduction of bass radiated backward! This not only makes stage performance significantly more relaxed but also leads to better sound, as microphone pickups are no longer affected by low frequencies.
